Smackdown Debate: How Credible Are the World ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵAPP¡¯s Global Poverty Estimates? How Can They Be Improved?

Since the creation of the ¡°dollar-a-day¡± international poverty line in the 1990 World Development Report, the World ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵAPP has been recognized as the global standard setter for poverty measurement. To ensure its approach continues to reflect the best available expertise on the issue, in 2016 the ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵAPP convened the Atkinson Commission on Global Poverty. Given the difficult methodological questions, however, scholars and practitioners have a variety of views on how global poverty should be measured. On March 5 Acting Director of Research Francisco Ferreira engaged in a lively debate with Professor Sanjay Reddy, one of the most prominent and vocal external critics of the ¶¹ÄÌÊÓƵAPP¡¯s approach.
